Julienne – San Marino

Recently my mom’s been asking me about a number of different brunch places that she’s recently come across by recommendation. I don’t eat brunch that often, simply because I don’t always have the time to and also because I’m kind of strange when it comes to breakfast or lunch. I often eat non-breakfast food for breakfast (ex: chimichangas and Marie Calendar chicken pot pies). So, it’s always a treat when we do go out to brunch. I honestly hadn’t heard of Julienne before, but was really intrigued when I perused the menu prior to eating there. It is on the pricier side, so for a student like me, I don’t recommend making it a habit to come here every weekend. Lucky for me, my parents decided to take their staff out for a company brunch and I got to tag along.

Izakaya Akatora – Alhambra

Izakaya Akatora’s entrance off Main Street

Izakaya Akatora recently opened up by one of Alhambra’s most prominent intersections, Main Street and Garfield Avenue. Established by Michael Cardenas, a prominent LA restaurateur who has other Japanese-inspired ventures sprinkled throughout LA, this is a Japanese pub-themed restaurant with a good selection of quintessential Japanese dishes alongside more modern dishes.

Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong 公和荳品廠 – Kowloon City

Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong (公和荳品廠) is steps away from Hoover Cake Shop in Kowloon City. One of several shops throughout Kowloon (the others are in Sham Shui Po and Tsim Sha Tsui), Kung Wo is an 100+ year old establishment best known for its soybean-based products.

Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐 – Da’an District

Din Tai Fung is a name that needs no introduction among Asian circles. It’s quite possibly Taiwan’s most famous restaurant chain. It’s renown for its precise preparation of xiaolongbao (小籠包), steamed dumplings indigenous to the area around Shanghai.

Cong Sao Dessert 聰嫂私房甜品 – Causeway Bay

Hong Kong is known for its diverse selection of desserts (甜品, tim ban), especially those that fuse together local Cantonese ingredients with Southeast Asian ones, like coconut milk and sago, the most iconic of which is mango pudding, a very light dessert, made with pureed mangoes, agar, and evaporated milk, and chilled before serving.

After getting a haircut near Times Square, a megamall in Causeway Bay, we headed out to try Cong Sao Dessert, a famous dessert shop just around the corner. After circling Hong Kong’s confusing city blocks, we managed to locate the place. Turns out the address on OpenRice was incorrect.

Ferry Building Marketplace – San Francisco

The Ferry Building is a beautiful historic building located on The Embarcadero, built 122 years ago. In fact, it served as San Francisco’s main port of entry until the Bay Bridge was built in 1936. Far from being obsolete, it still actively serves as a ferry terminal. However, much of the space has since been re-purposed to house food shops.

60 Hours in San Francisco – July 2013

Over the summer, my friends and I took a road trip up north to San Francisco, crashing at R’s home and tirelessly exploring the city in the 2.5 days we had. Despite the time crunch, we were able to hit up most of the places we had compiled on Google Docs, both hits and misses, and those in between. Good company, good eats, (reasonably) good weather. What more can you ask for?

Off the Grid at Fort Mason – San Francisco

Off the Grid is a a food truck experience more so than anything. I first stumbled on this event on Yelp, essentially a food truck market held once at a week at Fort Mason Center, which was once a military port.

Now I must admit, I’ve never been too fond of food trucks (especially those of the bourgeois sort), and Off the Grid didn’t really change my general opinion of them. Granted, there were a lot of interesting dishes I ended up having, given the sheer volume of trucks present on site.
